The Federal Government has opened applications for Cohort 2 of the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), an initiative designed to provide funding and support to promising student-led businesses in Nigeria.

Under the second cohort, 50 student-led STEMM ventures are expected to receive up to ₦50 million each in equity-free funding, alongside six months of mentorship.

The programme is being implemented through the Federal Ministry of Education to help student innovators turn promising ideas into businesses that can grow and compete in the market.

Unlike an investment that requires founders to give away part of their company, the S-VCG funding is described as equity-free, meaning selected beneficiaries do not have to surrender ownership of their ventures in exchange for the grant.

Who Can Apply for the Student Venture Capital Grant?

The programme is targeted at Nigerian students who are currently enrolled in accredited tertiary institutions and are building innovative ventures.

Applicants are expected to have a student-led venture based on STEMM-related ideas or solutions.

The venture should also demonstrate potential for growth, market relevance and the ability to address a real problem.

Areas that may qualify include:

  • Technology
  • Healthcare
  • Agriculture
  • Education
  • Energy
  • Logistics
  • E-commerce
  • Other STEMM-related areas

Students with ideas that can develop into commercially viable businesses are encouraged to apply.

Having an idea alone, however, does not necessarily mean an applicant will be selected. The proposal should clearly explain the problem being addressed, the solution being developed and how the venture can grow.

How Much Is the S-VCG Cohort 2 Grant?

Selected student ventures can receive up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding.

The amount awarded to each successful venture will depend on the programme’s assessment and selection process.

The funding is intended to help student founders develop and grow their ventures rather than simply provide personal financial support.

For students already working on a promising product or business, the funding could help with areas such as product development, expansion and taking the solution to market.

What Else Will Successful Applicants Receive?

Funding is not the only benefit attached to Cohort 2.

Selected ventures will also receive six months of mentorship.

The mentorship is intended to give student founders access to guidance from experienced entrepreneurs and organisations as they work on developing and scaling their ventures.

This can be particularly useful for students who have a promising idea but need support with turning it into a sustainable business.

The programme is also designed to help participants take their innovations from the development stage towards the market.

Is the Student Venture Capital Grant Equity-Free?

Yes.

The S-VCG describes the funding as equity-free.

This means successful student founders are not expected to give up a percentage of ownership in their businesses simply to receive the grant.

That makes the programme different from conventional venture capital investment, where an investor typically provides money in exchange for an ownership stake.

Students should still carefully read the official programme terms and conditions before submitting their proposals.

What Type of Ventures Are Eligible?

The programme is focused on STEMM-based student-led ventures.

This means applicants should have a business or innovative solution connected to science, technology, engineering, mathematics or related fields.

Potential areas include:

Technology: Software, digital products, artificial intelligence and other technology-based solutions.

Health: Health technology, medical solutions and innovations addressing healthcare challenges.

Agriculture: Agricultural technology, food production solutions and innovations that improve farming or food systems.

Education: Technology and other solutions aimed at improving learning and education.

Energy: Innovative solutions related to energy production, access, efficiency or management.

Logistics: Solutions that improve transportation, delivery and movement of goods.

E-commerce: Technology-driven solutions that improve buying, selling and other commercial activities.

The programme may also consider other ventures that fall within relevant STEMM areas.

What Should Applicants Include in Their Proposal?

Students should focus on clearly explaining their venture and why it deserves support.

A good proposal should make it easy to understand:

  • What problem does the venture solve?
  • What product or service are you offering?
  • Who needs the solution?
  • How does the solution work?
  • What makes the idea different?
  • How large is the potential market?
  • How can the venture generate revenue?
  • How will the funding help the business?
  • What are the plans for growth?
  • What impact could the venture have?

Avoid filling the proposal with complicated language.

The most important thing is to clearly show that the idea solves a real problem and has the potential to become a viable business.

S-VCG Cohort 2 and Student Entrepreneurs

The second cohort is also expected to expand outreach to student innovators across Nigeria.

According to the programme information, the management team will visit institutions across the country’s six geopolitical zones as part of its outreach activities.

A Campus Ambassador Programme will also be introduced across 20 additional institutions.

The aim is to reach more students who are developing businesses and innovative solutions but may not otherwise hear about the funding opportunity.

How to Apply for the Student Venture Capital Grant Cohort 2

Students who meet the eligibility requirements can submit their proposals through the official S-VCG application portal.

Before applying, make sure the information provided about your venture is accurate and consistent.

Pay attention to the requirements on the official portal and provide the information requested about your business or proposed solution.

Official S-VCG Application Portal

Eligible students can begin their application through the official Student Venture Capital Grant portal: Apply for the Student Venture Capital Grant  (https://svcg.education.gov.ng)

Students should use the official portal rather than relying on links shared through unofficial social media accounts or third-party websites.

What Students Should Do Before Applying

Before submitting your proposal, take time to properly explain your venture.

If you already have customers, sales, users, partnerships or other evidence showing that people need your product, include relevant information where the application allows it.

If your venture is still at the idea stage, clearly explain the problem, your proposed solution and how you intend to develop it.

You should also have a realistic idea of how the funding would be used.

For example, instead of simply saying you need ₦50 million to expand, explain what the money would help you achieve and how those activities would move the business forward.

Student Venture Capital Grant Cohort 2: Key Details

The Student Venture Capital Grant Cohort 2 is aimed at Nigerian students developing STEMM-based ventures.

Selected ventures are expected to receive:

  • Up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding
  • Six months of mentorship
  • Business and entrepreneurial guidance
  • Support towards developing and scaling their ventures
  • Assistance in taking innovative ideas to market

The programme is expected to select 50 student-led ventures for the second cohort.

Students who have a commercially promising STEMM-based idea or an existing student-led venture should check the official portal for the full eligibility requirements and application instructions before submitting their proposals.

The opportunity is particularly relevant to Nigerian students who have developed innovative solutions but need funding and mentorship to move from an idea or early-stage venture to a more established business.
