64th Independence: We must strengthen our institutions for good governance, growth- Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the importance of reinforcing democratic institutions as a vital strategy for achieving effective governance and driving national prosperity.
In a message shared on his X account on Tuesday, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, Jonathan stressed that the future of the nation hinges on the strength of its institutions and the cultivation of a democratic culture that champions transparency, fairness, and inclusivity.
He recognized Nigeria’s notable progress since gaining independence in 1960, particularly highlighting the 25 years of democratic governance experienced during the Fourth Republic, which began in 1999. “We have maintained democracy for 25 years in this Fourth Republic,” he remarked, commending the nation’s resilience in sustaining democratic principles after long periods of military rule.
However, he pointed out that the pressing challenges Nigeria faces today—such as insecurity, economic volatility, and social fragmentation—can only be effectively tackled through the enhancement of its institutions. “To deepen our democracy and promote inclusive economic growth, we must fortify our institutions and nurture a democratic culture that ensures free, transparent, and fair elections,” Jonathan stated.
He stressed that without strong institutions that guarantee accountability and uphold the rule of law, the nation’s development would remain hindered. Jonathan argued that electoral integrity is fundamental to good governance, asserting that transparent elections are essential for fostering trust in leadership and enhancing national unity.
Throughout his message, he underscored the necessity for governance systems that prioritize justice, equity, and inclusion, urging leaders to recommit to these ideals to provide equal opportunities for all Nigerians, regardless of their backgrounds. “As a nation, it is crucial that we reaffirm our dedication to justice, equity, and inclusion,” he said.
Jonathan also highlighted the need to leverage the potential of Nigeria’s youth, diverse population, and abundant natural resources to drive sustainable development. He believes that an inclusive governance approach, which capitalizes on the country’s diversity, is key to achieving enduring prosperity.
While acknowledging the economic growth Nigeria has experienced in recent years, he cautioned that more must be done to ensure this growth is inclusive and benefits all citizens. “We have seen noticeable growth in our economy and GDP,” he stated, warning that ongoing inequality and underdevelopment in certain regions threaten national cohesion.
In conclusion, Jonathan called for optimism and resilience, encouraging Nigerians to stay committed to the vision of a great nation despite the challenges ahead. “With shared purpose, enthusiasm, and mutual respect, we can overcome our difficulties and build the prosperous nation we all aspire to, where every citizen has the chance to thrive,” he concluded.
