The Federal Government has officially launched the GEEP 3.0 FarmerMoni programme in the South-East as part of ongoing efforts to support smallholder farmers, boost food production, and reduce poverty across rural communities in Nigeria.
The launch event took place in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, during the Renewed Hope FarmerMoni South-East Media Sensitisation and Stakeholders’ Engagement programme organised by the National Social Investment Programme Agency in partnership with the Ebonyi State Government.
The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader economic support programme targeted at low-income Nigerians, farmers, and small business owners under the Renewed Hope agenda.
What is FarmerMoni GEEP 3.0?
FarmerMoni is a Federal Government empowerment programme designed to provide interest-free loans to smallholder farmers across Nigeria.
The programme operates under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), one of Nigeria’s social investment schemes focused on improving access to finance for vulnerable groups.
According to officials, the latest phase of the programme aims to:
- Support rural farmers with farming capital
- Increase agricultural productivity
- Improve food security
- Reduce poverty in farming communities
- Help beneficiaries expand their agricultural businesses
Farmers to Receive N300,000 Support
Speaking during the event, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Mrs Ann Aligwe, revealed that more than 18,000 farmers in the state are expected to benefit from the programme.
She explained that each successful beneficiary would receive up to N300,000 to support farming activities and improve agricultural production.
According to her, the funds are expected to help farmers:
- Purchase farming inputs
- Expand cultivation
- Improve harvest output
- Increase profits and income levels
She also advised beneficiaries to use the funds strictly for farming purposes to ensure the success of the programme.
FG Says Beneficiaries Can Access Bigger Loans Later
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, represented by the National Programme Manager of GEEP, Alhaji Hazmat Baba, said the programme would also open doors for larger financial opportunities.
According to him, beneficiaries who repay successfully may qualify for higher loan facilities through partnerships with institutions such as:
- Bank of Agriculture
- NIRSAL
This means farmers who manage the initial support properly may later gain access to larger agricultural financing opportunities.
The launch comes at a time when many Nigerians are facing rising food prices, unemployment, and increasing economic hardship.
The Federal Government says programmes like FarmerMoni are designed to:
- Encourage food production
- Support local farmers
- Create jobs in rural communities
- Reduce dependency on imported food
- Improve economic stability for low-income households
Agriculture remains one of Nigeria’s biggest sectors for employment and rural development.
Ebonyi State Government Reacts
Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Ikeuwa Omebe, said the state government remains committed to supporting farmers and improving livelihoods through agricultural empowerment programmes.
He added that the partnership with the Federal Government would help strengthen ongoing rural development efforts across the state.
Who Can Benefit From FarmerMoni?
Although detailed application guidelines for the South-East phase are still expected, FarmerMoni is generally targeted at:
- Smallholder farmers
- Rural farmers
- Low-income agricultural workers
- Individuals involved in food production
Beneficiaries are usually verified through local structures and programme registration exercises.

Final Note
The launch of the FarmerMoni programme in the South-East marks another major effort by the Federal Government to support agriculture and rural economic development in Nigeria.
With thousands of farmers expected to benefit from the scheme, the initiative could provide relief for many rural households struggling with rising farming costs and economic challenges.
Farmers are advised to monitor official updates for registration and disbursement information as the programme expands across the region.
