Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has approved N500 million for a youth business support programme aimed at helping young people start small businesses and reduce unemployment across the state.
The governor announced the initiative during a statewide broadcast in Jalingo to mark his third anniversary in office, stating that the programme will officially begin in June 2026.
According to Kefas, the intervention is part of his administration’s efforts to create more economic opportunities for youths and strengthen entrepreneurship development in the state.
He disclosed that 296 youths have already registered for the programme and are expected to benefit from the first phase of the intervention.
The approved funds will be used to provide starter packs and business support for selected beneficiaries as part of plans to encourage self-employment and small business growth among young people.
Kefas said his administration believes youth empowerment remains critical to the long-term economic development of Taraba State, especially at a time when many young Nigerians are struggling with unemployment and limited access to business funding.
The governor also revealed that the state government has introduced biometric data capturing for participants to improve transparency and create a reliable database for youth-focused programmes and future planning.
According to him, the government recently established the Youth Development Agency and the Sports Commission as separate agencies to improve implementation of policies affecting young people and sports development across the state.
The N500 million programme is expected to provide financial and material support for youths looking to launch or expand small businesses, with the government hoping the initiative will help stimulate local economic activities and create employment opportunities.
The disbursement process is expected to commence in June as registration and verification of beneficiaries continue.
