Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has made a comeback to social media after enduring harsh criticism in the aftermath of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Ivory Coast.

Iwobi faced online abuse from fans across platforms like Instagram and Twitter due to his performance in the AFCON final. Consequently, he took the decision to delete all his posts on Instagram and deactivate his Twitter account.

However, amidst the backlash, Iwobi received considerable support from teammates and former Nigerian players, including his uncle, Austin Okocha, who condemned those targeting the Fulham player.

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, also offered words of encouragement to Iwobi, advising him to remain resilient despite the heavy criticisms.

After a hiatus of three weeks, Iwobi made his return to Instagram with a post on Sunday night. The post featured a compilation of his standout moments from the 2023 AFCON and his recent performances since rejoining Premier League club Fulham, including his crucial late goal against Manchester United in their 2-1 victory.

In the accompanying video, Iwobi could be heard rapping, addressing the criticism he faced during the AFCON and expressing gratitude to Frank Lampard for positioning him in midfield. His acknowledgment of Lampard’s role in his positional shift indicated a newfound confidence and determination.

Several of Iwobi’s Super Eagles teammates, including AFCON MVP William Troost-Ekong, Emmanuel Dennis, Frank Onyeka, and Kelechi Iheanacho, rallied behind him with supportive comments on his Instagram post.

Iwobi’s return to social media signals his resilience in the face of adversity, as he aims to regain confidence and continue making significant contributions on and off the pitch.
