APGA condemns lawmaker’s assault on Abuja driver, plans sanctions
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) issued a strong condemnation on Monday regarding the reported attack on an e-hailing driver by Alex Ikwechegh, the representative for the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
A widely circulated video appears to show Ikwechegh allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver who was delivering a package to his home. In response to this footage, APGA expressed that the lawmaker’s actions were entirely unacceptable and did not align with the standards set forth in the party’s constitution.
The party’s statement, released by National Publicity Secretary Mazi Ejimofor Opara, emphasized, “Our esteemed party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, has been alerted to a viral video depicting an alleged assault by the Honourable member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Alex Ikwechegh. As a party rooted in the respect for human rights, we unequivocally condemn the behavior of our member in the Federal Parliament.”
The statement further asserted that APGA is committed to upholding the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their background. The actions shown in the video contradict the party’s core principles.
To address this situation, APGA plans to establish a disciplinary committee to investigate the incident and determine appropriate consequences should Ikwechegh be found in violation of party rules.
Opara highlighted that all APGA members and elected officials are expected to maintain the highest levels of decorum, civility, and integrity in both public and private interactions. He concluded by noting, “Our party will not accept any behavior that deviates from the values espoused by our founders. In APGA, we strive to support one another, and that commitment must remain unwavering.”
