“I was racially discriminated in France” – Oxlade Discloses
Ikuforiji Olaitan, better known as Oxlade, is a singer who has recounted experiences with racism in France. The singer disclosed during a recent appearance on “The Datebizz” podcast that the event served as the inspiration for the title of his debut album, “Oxlade From Africa.”
“It was because of the racism I experienced in France, specifically in Monaco, that I chose to name my album Oxlade From Africa,” he recounted.
That’s what made me realise I’m African. I also realised that there is stigma associated with being African.
While we view ourselves as regular people in Africa, outsiders view us as odd, ape-like creatures.
To him, the names, Nigeria and Africa are both disparaging, according to Oxlade, a history and international relations graduate.
Oxlade further emphasised how names Nigeria and Africa are frequently associated with negative ideas throughout the world, underscoring the necessity for Africans to take ownership of and promote their identity.
Recall, Kulosa made Oxlade more famous in most parts of Europe.
The 2022 hit song “Kulosa,” by Afrobeats artist Oxlade, has surpassed 500,000 units in sales and is now certified gold in the US, marking a significant career milestone.
With over 400 million Spotify plays and over 187 million views across two music videos on YouTube, the song’s global appeal is evident.
Additionally, “Kulosa” enjoyed great success on the Billboard Afrobeats Chart, peaking there and remaining there for months.
Oxlade’s first album, Oxlade from Africa, includes the song “Kulosa,” which was co-written with well-known musicians Wande Coal, Flavour, Bobi Wine, Fally Ipupa, and Popcaan.
Oxlade is becoming more and more well-known throughout the world; it has certifications in France, Canada, the UK, Nigeria, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland.
