NAFDAC warns patent medicine dealers against substandard drugs

Director General NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye

Prof. Moji Adeyeye, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has issued a strong alert to members of the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers regarding the dangers of dealing in substandard medications.

Highlighting the pressing need for robust actions against counterfeit and low-quality medical products, Adeyeye’s message was conveyed by Fraden Bitrus, the agency’s Director of Post-Marketing Surveillance, during a one-day awareness campaign in Abuja on Monday.

“Today’s discussion focuses on a vital topic: ensuring the availability of quality products for our communities,” Bitrus remarked, emphasizing the necessity of putting community health above profit motives.

He urged attendees to acknowledge their vital role as healthcare professionals, stating, “Your contributions have a direct impact on community health. It is crucial to prioritize their interests.”

Bitrus shared essential strategies to prevent the distribution of counterfeit goods, advising members to procure from reliable suppliers and to confirm that all products adhere to regulatory standards. “To steer clear of counterfeit products, it is imperative to source wisely and ensure compliance with NAFDAC regulations,” he stressed.

“Let’s join forces against counterfeit products. Support NAFDAC in its mission to eliminate harmful items from our markets,” he added.

He concluded by reiterating the campaign’s core messages, urging participants to focus on community health, source quality products, and fulfill their professional duties. “Together, we can ensure that Nigeria has access to safe and effective medications,” he emphasized, underscoring the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in combating substandard drugs.
