Andrés Iniesta, often celebrated as one of the finest midfielders in football history, has announced his retirement from professional play at the age of 40.
The Spanish legend plans to make a formal announcement on October 8, marking the conclusion of a remarkable career that has lasted over 20 years. Iniesta teased his decision with a video shared on his X account, stating, “Coming soon 8/10/24.”
Iniesta’s football journey began at Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, where his extraordinary ball control, vision, and poise quickly set him apart. His exceptional talent was recognized early on, with then-Barcelona captain Pep Guardiola famously remarking to Xavi, “You’re going to retire me. This kid [Iniesta] is going to retire us all.”
Regarded for his technical prowess, Iniesta has been praised throughout his career. FIFA.com noted, “His direct style and quick feet allow him to shine in attacking positions, with the ball seemingly glued to his feet as he pushes forward.”
Former national team coach Vicente del Bosque described Iniesta as “a complete footballer,” capable of both offensive and defensive contributions, as well as creating and scoring goals.
Iniesta’s trophy collection reflects his exceptional talent and includes an impressive 35 titles during his 22 years at Barcelona, featuring nine La Liga championships and four UEFA Champions League victories. This achievement solidifies his status as the most decorated Spanish player in history.
On the international front, Iniesta was a key figure during Spain’s golden age, playing crucial roles in their triumphs at UEFA Euro 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His decisive goal in the final against the Netherlands remains a historic moment in football.
After departing from Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta continued his career in Japan with Vissel Kobe and later had a brief stint at UAE Pro League club Emirates. His exceptional game-reading ability and close ball control have made him one of the most celebrated midfielders in the sport’s history.
