Tinubu Appoints Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, Moves Doris Uzoka-Anite to Budget Ministry

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed renowned economist and tax policy expert Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance, marking a fresh adjustment in Nigeria’s economic management team.

The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that the appointment forms part of a minor cabinet reshuffle within the administration’s economic sector.

According to the statement, Oyedele will replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has now been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State. The change represents her third ministerial assignment since the current administration came into office.

The presidency also confirmed that President Tinubu has formally transmitted Oyedele’s nomination to the Senate through a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, seeking legislative confirmation before he officially assumes office.

Background and Professional Profile

Before his nomination into the federal cabinet, Taiwo Oyedele served as the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. The committee was responsible for reviewing and restructuring Nigeria’s tax system in a bid to improve revenue generation and simplify the country’s fiscal framework.

The committee’s work attracted significant national attention as it proposed wide-ranging tax reforms designed to expand the tax base, reduce multiple taxation, and modernize Nigeria’s fiscal policies.

Oyedele, who hails from Ikaram in Akoko area of Ondo State, is widely regarded as a leading authority in taxation, fiscal policy, and public finance.

Academic and Professional Achievements

The 50-year-old economist began his academic journey at Yaba College of Technology, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance.

He later pursued further studies at Oxford Brookes University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting.

In addition to his academic qualifications, Oyedele has participated in several executive education programmes at some of the world’s leading institutions, including the London School of EconomicsYale UniversityHarvard Kennedy School, and the Gordon Institute of Business Science in South Africa.

Professionally, Oyedele spent more than two decades working at the global consulting and accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). During his 22-year career at the firm, which began in 2001, he rose through the ranks to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.

His extensive experience advising governments and multinational corporations on tax policy and fiscal matters has earned him recognition both within Nigeria and internationally.

Academic Contributions

Beyond his professional career, Oyedele has also contributed to academic development. He currently serves as a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and has also worked as a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.

Through these roles, he has been involved in teaching, research, and mentoring students in areas related to finance, taxation, and public policy.

Implications for Nigeria’s Economic Policy

Oyedele’s appointment is seen by many analysts as a strategic move by the Tinubu administration to strengthen fiscal management and accelerate the implementation of ongoing tax reforms.

Nigeria has been grappling with revenue challenges, rising debt obligations, and the need to diversify government income beyond oil. Experts believe that strengthening fiscal policy frameworks will play a crucial role in addressing these issues.

Given Oyedele’s track record in tax reform and fiscal policy design, his appointment could signal a stronger push toward restructuring Nigeria’s tax administration and improving revenue generation across federal and subnational governments.

However, the success of these reforms will depend on effective implementation, coordination with other economic institutions, and the broader macroeconomic policies of the government.

The Senate is expected to consider his nomination in the coming weeks. If confirmed, Oyedele will join the Ministry of Finance leadership team headed by Finance Minister Wale Edun.
