Vaccines safe, effective-WHO

Dr. Walter Mulombo, the World Health Organisation’s Country Representative in Nigeria, affirmed the safety and efficacy of vaccines during a workshop for journalists in Abuja aimed at improving health reporting and understanding of global health matters.

Speaking on Friday, Mulombo emphasized that the WHO conducts thorough evaluations of vaccines before granting approval. He noted that Nigeria is set to integrate the malaria vaccine into its routine immunization schedule, alongside the recent addition of a single-dose Human Papillomavirus vaccine in October 2023.

He stated, “I want to emphasize that vaccines are both safe and effective. Before the WHO allows any vaccine to be distributed, it undergoes an extensive review by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Vaccines and Immunization, which examines all available evidence. The introduction of the malaria vaccine in Nigeria is a result of this rigorous process.”

Mulombo also highlighted the importance of addressing misinformation, stating, “If you need more information or evidence, we are your trusted source. Don’t hesitate to challenge false narratives. Access to universal vaccination is a fundamental human right. The death of a mother during childbirth or a child’s missed vaccine represents a violation of human rights.”

He warned that unchecked misinformation can hinder communities’ access to essential health resources, contributing to high rates of maternal and child mortality.

Furthermore, he called for Nigeria to advance beyond pilot initiatives, urging a focus on providing comprehensive, high-quality healthcare services. Mulombo stressed the importance of collaboration between the government and communities to tackle the significant challenges facing the health sector.
