You exemplify religious tolerance, Abiodun tells Awujale

Ogun State Governor, Mr. Dapo Abiodun, has called on the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, to leverage his extensive experience as a compassionate and courageous leader to promote unity, peace, and religious tolerance throughout Nigeria. This appeal was made during a ceremony on Tuesday that honored the 90-year-old royal with the title of Amir ul Mulukil Muslimin Fi Bilad (Commander of Muslim Kings) in Yoruba land, as well as in Edo and Delta States.

The event took place at the Palace grounds in Ijebu-Ode and was organized by the League of Imams and Alfas representing Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States. It attracted notable figures, including the Asiwaju of Ijebu land, Alhaji Adebola Adegunwa; the Chairman of Bigi Industries; former state Deputy Governors Senator Gbenga Kaka and Alhaja Salmot Badru; the Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewa Land, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle; and renowned fuji musician Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, among other dignitaries.

In his remarks, Governor Abiodun expressed that it was fitting for Oba Adetona to receive this honor, given his exemplary leadership and significant contributions toward making the world a better place. He stated, “Today’s ceremony celebrates faith, values, and the courageous leadership exemplified by the Awujale throughout his reign. Our new Amir embodies compassion, wisdom, and integrity—qualities that define true leaders, making him deserving of this prestigious role.”

Abiodun emphasized that the appointment of Oba Adetona as Amir Mulukil Muslimin symbolizes his commitment to inclusivity, justice, and peace. He noted that the Awujale serves as a vital link between tradition and modernity, highlighting his faith and God-fearing nature as examples of religious tolerance.

The governor urged the Awujale to utilize his new position to further promote unity and peace across Nigeria, stressing that a nation cannot thrive in a chaotic environment. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to foster religious tolerance and strengthen national unity.

In a significant announcement, Abiodun revealed plans to commence the reconstruction of the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode express road, stating that President Bola Tinubu had recently approved the project. He mentioned that he had met with President Tinubu the previous week to discuss the urgent need for repairs on the road, which has suffered from neglect for some time.

“This flagging off of the reconstruction of this critical road, which serves 17 states in the southern region, will take place today,” he stated, noting that he was scheduled to meet with the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, for the official launch. Abiodun described President Tinubu as a responsive leader deeply committed to addressing the nation’s challenges, urging the public to continue supporting the current administration.

Earlier, Professor Emeritus and Chief Imam of Gbagura, Kamaldeen Balogun, encouraged the Awujale to continue using his position to foster the development of Islam and enhance the welfare and empowerment of Muslims across Nigeria. He urged the royal father to champion the respectful installation and burial of traditional rulers in line with their religious beliefs, as he has successfully facilitated for royal leaders in Ogun State.

Furthermore, Balogun suggested that the Awujale consider establishing a university for Muslims in the country or creating a world-class library to leave a lasting legacy that promotes educational advancement. Through these initiatives, he could further enrich the community and ensure that the values of education and empowerment continue to thrive among Muslims in Nigeria.
