Female S’African cop nabbed for killing six over R10m insurance payout
A South African police officer faced court on Friday, charged with the alleged murders of six individuals in pursuit of insurance payouts totaling over 10 million rand (approximately $570,000). These killings reportedly began in 2019.
The accused, 43-year-old Sergeant Rachel Kutumela, appeared in a Polokwane courtroom, located about 300 kilometers (190 miles) northeast of Johannesburg. Initially, she concealed her identity with a hoodie and mask, but the court instructed her to reveal her face during the proceedings.
Kutumela was taken into custody on Thursday while she was on duty at a police station in the small town of Senwabarwana, which is roughly 90 kilometers from Polokwane. According to police reports, her victims were acquaintances who came from impoverished backgrounds, with some being disabled or mentally challenged.
The charges against her include six counts of murder, along with claims that she had collected at least 10 million rand from funeral insurance and life policies she had taken out on the deceased. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) detailed that the series of crimes began in 2019, when the insured individuals were found dead, with their bodies disposed of in various locations.
In one particularly disturbing case, the body of a disabled man was retrieved from a dam, while another victim, a woman, was found burned to death in a shack. Mashudu Malabi Dzhangi, the NPA’s provincial spokesperson, described the case as premeditated, emphasizing the calculated nature of the alleged crimes. The court has postponed the case until October 18 for a bail hearing, and prosecutors indicated that they anticipate additional arrests may follow.
This incident echoes a high-profile case in 2021 that captured national attention, involving former police officer Rosemary Ndlovu. She was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering five relatives and a boyfriend to profit from insurance claims.
The shocking nature of these crimes raises significant concerns about the potential exploitation of vulnerable individuals for financial gain. The police and legal authorities are under pressure to ensure that justice is served and that such heinous acts do not go unpunished.
As the case against Kutumela unfolds, it sheds light on the darker sides of insurance fraud and the exploitation of those in desperate situations. The community is left grappling with the implications of having a trusted member of law enforcement implicated in such serious offenses, raising questions about oversight and accountability within the police force. The upcoming hearings are expected to reveal more details about the investigation and the extent of Kutumela’s alleged crimes, as well as the motivations behind her actions.
