Police nab wanted armed robber, rape suspect in Ogun
The Ogun State police command announced on Monday that officers from the Igbeba Division in Ijebu-Ode apprehended Shedrack Olawale Olayemi, a suspect linked to armed robbery and the alleged sexual assault of female students from Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun last July.
In a statement provided to journalists, the police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, revealed that the 33-year-old Olayemi had been on the run and was identified after intelligence reports indicated he was spotted in the vicinity of the university, attempting to blend in with the local population.
The statement detailed, “The divisional police officer at Igbeba received a tip-off about Olayemi’s presence in Ijagun, where he was trying to conceal his identity. Upon verification through our intelligence sources, the police were alerted, leading to his swift arrest.”
Olayemi is accused of being a key participant in a robbery and rape incident that occurred on July 21, 2024. According to the police, he and his accomplices broke into the Royal Villa accommodation area for female students at Tai Solarin University, where they stole valuable items, including laptops, iPhones, sports watches, and cash. The incident also involved the sexual assault of one of the students, after which Olayemi fled the scene.
The police have initiated a preliminary investigation and have taken Olayemi to the Igbeba police station for questioning. He is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Additionally, the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha, has instructed that Olayemi’s accomplices be located and apprehended. He has also appealed to the Ijagun community to provide any credible information that could assist in identifying and capturing other members of this criminal group.
