France Denies Sending Warships to the Strait of Hormuz

The French government has dismissed reports suggesting it is deploying its aircraft carrier strike group to the Strait of Hormuz, describing the claims as false and misleading.

Through its official response platform, the French Foreign Ministry clarified that there has been no change in France’s military posture and that its naval forces remain stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

France Issues Clarification

In a series of posts, the ministry emphasized that the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its accompanying strike group are not being moved to the Gulf region.

According to the statement, the deployment remains unchanged and the mission continues to be strictly defensive.

French officials stressed that:

  • The carrier strike group is still operating in the Eastern Mediterranean.

  • France’s military posture has not shifted toward escalation.

  • The current mission remains defensive and protective in nature.

The ministry also urged the public and commentators to stop spreading speculation or unverified claims about military movements, warning against unnecessary panic or misinformation.

Background to the Rumours

Speculation about a possible deployment emerged amid growing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime chokepoints in the world. Roughly a fifth of global oil shipments pass through the narrow waterway each day.

Reports circulating online had suggested that Western countries were considering sending naval forces to secure the route if tensions escalate in the region.

Some commentators linked the speculation to calls reportedly made by Donald Trump urging allied countries to help protect shipping lanes in the Gulf.

Strategic Importance of the Carrier

The Charles de Gaulle is the flagship of the French Navy and the only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier operated by a European country. When deployed, it typically leads a strike group consisting of escort warships, submarines, and support vessels.

Its presence in the Mediterranean Sea is often linked to security operations, regional deterrence, and support for allied missions.

France’s Position

By publicly addressing the rumours, French authorities appear intent on preventing speculation that could suggest a widening international military involvement in the Gulf region.

For now, France maintains that its naval deployment remains unchanged and defensive, and that reports claiming the carrier group is heading toward the Strait of Hormuz are inaccurate.

French officials concluded their response with a clear message: “Stop the scaremongering.”
