At Least 16 Feared Dead as Overloaded Canoe Capsizes in Jigawa State, Search and Rescue Operations Ongoing

Tragedy struck Adiyani village in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State after a canoe conveying dozens of passengers capsized while attempting to cross a river, leaving at least sixteen people confirmed dead and several others still unaccounted for. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has thrown families and neighbouring communities into deep mourning and renewed concerns over safety standards in riverine transportation across rural Nigeria.

The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident through its Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Lawan Shiisu Adam. According to him, the canoe was carrying about 30 passengers who were travelling between neighbouring communities when it suddenly overturned mid-journey, plunging everyone on board into the river.

Initial reports indicate that ten passengers were rescued alive shortly after the accident, while fourteen others were initially declared missing. As rescue efforts progressed, authorities confirmed that at least sixteen bodies had been recovered, though search operations continue for any remaining victims who may still be trapped underwater or swept away by the current.

SP Adam explained that police operatives, working alongside local divers, traditional rescue volunteers and community members, immediately mobilised to the scene upon receiving distress calls. The responders reportedly faced significant challenges, including poor visibility and strong water currents, but pressed on with rescue and recovery efforts in a bid to save lives.

“The canoe was conveying passengers across the river when it capsized,” the police spokesperson said. “All occupants were thrown into the water. While ten persons were rescued alive, search and rescue operations are still ongoing to locate those who remain missing.”

Eyewitnesses from the community described a chaotic scene as villagers rushed to the riverbank upon hearing cries for help. Many residents reportedly jumped into the water in desperate attempts to save their relatives and neighbours before official rescue teams arrived.

Though investigations are still at an early stage, preliminary findings suggest that overcrowding may have contributed to the accident. Local sources disclosed that the canoe was heavily loaded and may not have been structurally fit to carry the number of passengers onboard at the time of the incident. None of the passengers was reportedly wearing a life jacket.

SP Adam confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the capsizing, including whether safety regulations were violated. He also issued a strong warning to residents of riverine communities to avoid overloading canoes and boats, stressing the importance of adhering to basic safety measures during water transportation.

“Residents must avoid overcrowding boats and should ensure safety precautions are observed at all times, especially during river crossings,” he said. “These precautions can save lives.”

The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers associated with water transport in rural areas, where rivers often serve as the primary means of movement between communities due to poor road infrastructure. Despite recurring accidents, enforcement of safety standards remains weak, and access to life-saving equipment such as life jackets is limited.

Community leaders and concerned Nigerians have called on government authorities to strengthen regulation of inland waterways, improve public awareness on water safety, and provide affordable safety gear to residents who rely on canoes for daily transportation. Some have also urged the establishment of a functional waterways safety agency at the local level to monitor passenger limits and vessel conditions.

Meanwhile, grief has enveloped Adiyani village and surrounding areas, as families await news of missing loved ones. Many residents described the tragedy as a devastating way to begin the new year, noting that several households lost breadwinners and young family members in the accident.

Religious leaders and community elders have offered prayers for the repose of the deceased and comfort for the bereaved families. They also appealed to authorities to ensure that lessons are learned from the incident to prevent future occurrences.
