BREAKING: Kekere-Ekun sworn in as 23rd substantive CJN
President Bola Tinubu has officially appointed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria, following her Senate confirmation on September 25, 2024.
The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja on Monday, where Kekere-Ekun signed the official register. She takes over from Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on August 22, 2024, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The event was attended by notable figures, including three former Chief Justices: Justice Aloma Mukhtar, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, and Justice Walter Onnoghen, alongside her predecessor, Justice Ariwoola. Family members and fellow Supreme Court justices were also present to witness the occasion.
This marks Kekere-Ekun’s second oath of office in just five weeks; she was initially sworn in as acting Chief Justice by Tinubu on August 23, prior to her formal confirmation by the Senate.
