Bwala Accuses Al Jazeera of ‘Opposition-Style Journalism’ After Heated Interview on Tinubu’s Government
The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has criticised the international broadcaster Al Jazeera following a widely circulated interview that examined the performance of the current Nigerian administration.
Bwala appeared on the programme “Head to Head”, hosted by British journalist Mehdi Hasan, where he was asked to defend the policies of Tinubu’s government. The interview, which focused on Nigeria’s political and economic direction under the theme “Nigeria: Renewed Hope or Hopelessness?”, quickly gained attention online after clips of the exchange went viral on social media.
During the programme, Hasan confronted Bwala with several past statements and video clips in which he had criticised Tinubu before later joining the administration. At the time those comments were made, Bwala was politically aligned with former Nigerian Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, a leading opposition figure.
The journalist repeatedly referenced Bwala’s earlier remarks, asking him to explain why his position appeared to have changed after becoming part of the current government.
Bwala Responds to Viral Interview
Following the broadcast, Bwala issued a public statement responding to the interview and accusing the network of adopting what he described as “opposition-style journalism.”
According to him, the producers of the programme initially invited him to discuss issues related to Nigeria’s security challenges, economic situation and allegations of corruption in government. However, he claimed that the focus on his past criticism of Tinubu was never communicated during the months of preparation leading up to the interview.
Bwala said the interview team had been in communication with him for nearly six months but failed to disclose that the discussion would centre heavily on his previous political statements.
He argued that professional standards would have required the producers to inform him beforehand if they intended to question him about comments he made while he was in the opposition.
Despite his criticism, Bwala maintained that he remains willing to appear on international platforms to defend the policies of the current administration.
According to him, he is prepared to face any interviewer anywhere in the world to explain and promote the government’s agenda.
“It Is All Politics”
Addressing the controversy surrounding his past criticism of Tinubu, Bwala said the statements were made during his time in the opposition and should be understood within the context of political competition.
He described the situation as a common feature of politics where individuals may criticise one another while in rival camps but later work together in government.
To illustrate his point, Bwala referenced the political dynamics in the United States, noting that several members of the administration of Donald Trump had previously spoken against him before eventually serving in his cabinet.
He also suggested that some members of Tinubu’s own cabinet had previously criticised the president before joining his government.
According to Bwala, such political shifts do not concern Tinubu, whom he said remains focused on governance rather than past political disagreements.
Criticism of Opposition Parties
Bwala further used the opportunity to criticise Nigeria’s opposition parties, claiming they lack a clear political vision or policy alternatives to present to Nigerians.
He argued that much of the reaction to the interview came from opposition supporters who were celebrating what they perceived as a difficult moment for him during the programme.
However, he insisted that the interview would not change the political landscape, adding that critics of the government should present their own ideas and policies if they wish to challenge the administration.
Bwala also encouraged opposition figures to subject themselves to similar international interviews where they could be questioned about their plans for the country.
Public Reaction
The interview has sparked widespread debate across social media platforms, with many Nigerians sharing clips of the exchange and expressing different views about Bwala’s performance and the journalist’s questioning style.
Some observers praised Hasan’s approach, saying the interview demonstrated the importance of holding public officials accountable for their past statements. Others argued that the questioning was overly confrontational and focused too heavily on political history rather than current policies.
Regardless of the differing opinions, the interview has drawn international attention to Nigeria’s political discourse and the ongoing debate surrounding the policies of President Tinubu’s administration.
As the discussion continues online, the viral interview highlights the growing influence of global media platforms in shaping political narratives and scrutinising government officials beyond their domestic audiences.
