The Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of approved outstanding 2025 allowances to beneficiaries of the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme studying in partner countries abroad.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has successfully remitted the approved funds to Nigerian Embassies and Missions abroad for immediate payment to eligible scholars.
FG Releases 50% of Outstanding BEA Allowances
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, confirmed that the released funds represent 50 percent of the approved outstanding obligations for 2025. He added that efforts are already ongoing to ensure the remaining balance is processed and paid in due course.
He explained that the funds have already been credited to embassy accounts, and Nigerian missions abroad are expected to begin immediate disbursement to affected students.
Beneficiaries of the BEA Scholarship Programme have been advised to regularly check their accounts as payments begin to reflect across various partner countries.
Dr. Alausa noted that the development reflects the Federal Government’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, particularly in supporting Nigerian students studying abroad.
FG Reaffirms Commitment to Education Funding
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to meeting legitimate obligations owed to Nigerian scholars and sustaining policies aimed at improving education quality, student welfare, and national human capital development.
Officials also emphasized that the BEA programme remains a key part of Nigeria’s international education support framework.
What is the BEA Scholarship Programme?
The Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme is a Federal Government initiative administered by the Federal Ministry of Education. It is designed to provide Nigerian students with the opportunity to study in partner countries that have bilateral education agreements with Nigeria.
Under the programme, successful candidates are sponsored to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in selected fields such as science, engineering, medicine, and other priority disciplines, depending on the host country’s agreement with Nigeria.
The scholarship typically covers tuition, living expenses, and other approved allowances for the duration of study, making it one of Nigeria’s long-standing international scholarship schemes.
How BEA Scholarship Application is Conducted
The BEA scholarship application process is usually coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with State Ministries of Education.
The process generally includes:
- Public Advertisement: The Federal Ministry announces the scholarship application through official channels and national publications.
- Online/Manual Application: Eligible candidates submit applications based on set academic requirements.
- Screening and Shortlisting: Applications are reviewed by relevant education authorities.
- Selection Examination/Interview: Shortlisted candidates may undergo written tests or interviews depending on the category of scholarship.
- Final Nomination: Successful candidates are nominated for placement in partner countries.
- Embassy Processing: Selected scholars are later processed through embassies of the host countries for admission and visa arrangements.
Over the years, the programme has remained highly competitive due to limited slots and high demand from qualified Nigerian students.
