On Friday, Megalife Sciences launched its innovative ‘We Care Diabetes’ app, aimed at enhancing real-time medical care for the increasing number of diabetes patients in Nigeria.

The announcement was made during the 45th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Dr. Binu Joy, CEO of Health@Home, Megalife Sciences’ Digital Division, highlighted the company’s mission to transform diabetes care across Nigeria and Africa through digital solutions.

Joy explained that just as technology has revolutionized sectors like education and finance, it is now playing a crucial role in healthcare. “In managing chronic conditions like diabetes, patients need consistent access to their healthcare providers,” he said. The app facilitates this connection, allowing users to better understand and manage their condition over time.

The app empowers patients by providing essential information about their health, including dietary guidance and self-management tools. “With this digital tool, patients can take ownership of their health,” Joy added. It streamlines consultations by ensuring that all medical records are accessible, enabling doctors to quickly assess and respond to patients’ needs.

Designed for user-friendliness, the app caters to regions where digital literacy may still be developing. Prof. Michael Olamoyegun, a Consultant Endocrinologist at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, emphasized the importance of technology in reaching underserved diabetes patients. He explained that the app allows users to log their blood sugar levels and communicate directly with healthcare professionals for real-time feedback.

“The app prioritizes patient privacy, ensuring that individual data remains confidential,” Olamoyegun noted. This innovation enhances diabetes management and expands access to specialist care.

Ibukun Adetuyi, Head of Digital Marketing at Megalife Sciences, acknowledged the complexities of managing diabetes, which often involves multiple stakeholders. She stated that the ‘We Care Diabetes’ app aims to unify care by providing a single platform where patients, doctors, and caregivers can collaborate effectively.

Adetuyi further explained that the app can integrate with other healthcare tools, such as glucometers, via Bluetooth, allowing patients to consolidate their medical information in one place. “Our goal is to encourage diabetes patients to adopt this app, as it significantly eases their management of the condition and improves their overall healthcare experience,” she concluded.
