I’ll stand by you, Kogi gov assures flood victims

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo

On Tuesday, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo visited the Adankolo Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp to show support for families affected by severe flooding in the area. This visit was detailed in a statement from the governor’s Special Adviser, Ismail Isah, released on Wednesday. The governor was joined by his deputy, Joel Salifu, and several other high-ranking officials.

During his visit, Governor Ododo distributed relief supplies provided by the state government to those impacted by the disaster, reaffirming his dedication to their well-being. Mouktar Atimah, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, expressed gratitude for the governor’s swift action in addressing the needs of the flood victims, noting that his presence lifted the spirits of those displaced.

“I have come here to stand with you during this difficult time. It is my duty to mobilize resources from the government to support you, and we will do everything possible to assist you,” Ododo stated. He also commended the Flood Response Team, led by the deputy governor, for their relentless efforts in aiding those affected.

Kogi State has been severely impacted by flooding, with thousands of homes submerged and over a million residents displaced as water levels continue to rise. One displaced individual, Abdul Isah, highlighted the governor’s commitment to the welfare of those affected. “My family has lost everything due to the flood. Governor Ododo’s visit shows he truly cares about us. He didn’t just bring food and supplies; he came to understand our struggles firsthand. For the first time in days, I felt a sense of hope because my governor is here,” Isah shared.

The state government has initiated an early warning system to inform residents and encourage them to relocate to safer areas. Flooding has impacted nine of the state’s 21 local government areas. The Kogi government has reached out to the federal administration and international organizations for assistance, describing the situation as “devastating.”
