Cholera: UNICEF donates N113m medical supplies to Borno
In a recent statement, Abubakar Hassan, the Special Adviser on Health to the Borno State Governor, expressed gratitude to UNICEF for their generous donation. He noted, “Just four days ago, the commissioner officially declared a cholera outbreak in specific areas of Borno State, affecting four local governments.”
“Today, UNICEF has efficiently mobilized resources, procuring and donating vital case management supplies worth over N113 million at current rates. The state government recognizes UNICEF as a strong, dependable, and consistently cooperative partner,” he added.
Hassan highlighted the significance of the donation, stating, “UNICEF is known for its focus on children, education, and various other initiatives. Tragically, both the young and elderly have already fallen victim to this infection. Hence, acquiring this critical equipment is essential. On behalf of Governor Babagana Zulum, the staff and management of the Ministry of Health under Commissioner Baba Gana, and the people of Borno State, I would like to formally extend our heartfelt thanks.”
The state’s Ministry of Health reported approximately 450 suspected cholera cases across five local government areas, with 128 Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT) returning positive and 17 cultures confirming the presence of Vibrio cholera, following recent flooding that impacted the state capital and surrounding areas.
The local governments affected by the outbreak include MMC, Jere, Konduga, Mafa, and Monguno.
