The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities in the disbursement of funds under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme.

The student body expressed concern over reports suggesting that there may be discrepancies between the amounts reportedly disbursed through the student loan programme and the figures reflected in the financial records of some tertiary institutions.

According to NANS, the allegations, if proven, could undermine public confidence in one of Nigeria’s most important education financing initiatives.

NANS Raises Concerns Over Alleged Discrepancies

In a statement released on Tuesday, NANS said it had received reports and documents indicating possible differences between the loan amounts displayed on the NELFUND portal and the amounts recorded by some institutions.

The association noted that the development has raised questions about transparency and accountability in the management of student loan funds.

NELFUND was established by the Federal Government to provide interest-free loans to eligible students in public tertiary institutions across the country.

Under the scheme, institutional charges are paid directly to schools, while approved upkeep allowances are sent to students’ bank accounts.

However, concerns have emerged over whether all disbursed funds are being properly accounted for at the institutional level.

Student Body Calls for Nationwide Probe

Reacting to the allegations, NANS urged anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The association stated that any form of financial misconduct involving funds meant for students should not be ignored.

According to NANS, Nigerian students deserve full transparency regarding how NELFUND disbursements are managed by institutions.

The group emphasized that the student loan programme was created to reduce financial barriers to education and should not be compromised by alleged irregularities.

Demand for Refunds to Affected Students

Beyond the call for an investigation, NANS also demanded that any student found to have been shortchanged should receive an immediate refund.

The association argued that beneficiaries should not bear the consequences of administrative errors or alleged financial mismanagement.

It maintained that every naira allocated under the student loan scheme should be used strictly for the benefit of the students it was intended to support.

According to the student body, institutions found to have withheld, mismanaged, or failed to properly account for NELFUND-related funds should be held responsible.

Universities and Other Institutions Asked to Explain Transactions

NANS further called on universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to provide clear explanations regarding all transactions linked to NELFUND disbursements.

The association believes that greater openness from institutions would help address concerns being raised by students and stakeholders.

Education experts have also stressed the importance of maintaining accurate records and ensuring that students can easily track the status of their loans and payments.

NANS President Speaks

Speaking on the issue, NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said the association would continue to protect the interests of Nigerian students.

He warned that funds intended to support education should never be diverted or subjected to abuse.

According to him, the future of Nigerian students must not be jeopardized by corruption, negligence, or financial misconduct.

The student leader reaffirmed the association’s commitment to demanding accountability and ensuring that students receive the full benefits of government education support programmes.

Calls for Stronger Monitoring of NELFUND Disbursements

NANS also urged NELFUND authorities to strengthen oversight mechanisms and improve monitoring systems to prevent future disputes.

The association believes that regular audits, improved reporting

systems, and transparent communication with beneficiaries can help build trust in the programme.

Many students have welcomed the student loan scheme since its launch, describing it as a major relief amid rising educational costs.

However, stakeholders say maintaining confidence in the initiative will require strict accountability from all parties involved.

What This Means for Students

For students currently benefiting from NELFUND, the latest development highlights the importance of monitoring their loan records and keeping copies of all relevant documents.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to:

  • Keep records of school fee payments and receipts.

  • Save copies of NELFUND approval notifications.

  • Monitor their loan status regularly.

  • Report any discrepancies through official channels.

  • Seek clarification from their institutions where necessary.

Doing so can help students identify potential issues early and ensure that their records accurately reflect the support they have received.

Final Thoughts

The call by NANS for a nationwide investigation reflects growing concerns about accountability in the management of student loan funds.

While investigations and reviews may reveal the full picture, students and stakeholders agree on one thing: funds intended to support education must be managed transparently and used strictly for their intended purpose.

As the situation develops, many students will be hoping for clear answers, greater transparency, and stronger safeguards to protect beneficiaries of the NELFUND programme.
