NELFUND Management has issued a fresh update regarding the alleged suspension of student upkeep allowance payments following growing complaints and concerns raised by students across social media platforms.
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the federal government has stopped the payment of student upkeep allowances.
In a statement released on Thursday, May 28, the agency described the reports as false, misleading, and deliberately designed to create panic among students and the public.
According to NELFUND, the viral publication was linked to a fake newspaper front page falsely attributed to The Nigerian Tribune. Officials stated that investigations showed the image was artificially generated using AI tools and circulated online to spread misinformation about the student loan programme.
The agency stressed that no directive has been issued by the federal government to suspend upkeep payments for student beneficiaries.
NELFUND reassured students that the disbursement process remains active and operational, adding that approved beneficiaries will continue receiving their upkeep support and student loans according to the established schedule.
The organisation also clarified that the reports did not originate from any recognised government institution or credible media outlet.
Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, signed the official statement and urged Nigerians to avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing unnecessary fear among students and parents.
She encouraged beneficiaries to rely only on official communication platforms for updates regarding loan applications, upkeep payments, and disbursement schedules.
Students seeking clarification or support were advised to contact the agency through its official communication channels, including its verified social media pages and support email.

According to him, the support received through the programme played a major role in helping him focus on his academics and achieve outstanding results.
The convocation ceremony saw thousands of students receive bachelor’s degrees across various faculties, with over a hundred graduates earning First Class honours.
