The final validation workshop for Nigeria’s draft national blue economy strategy is scheduled to take place in Abuja from October 14 to 16, 2024. This announcement was made by the African Union – Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources on Monday.

Funded by the Kingdom of Norway, the workshop aims to bring together key stakeholders to review and endorse the strategy, which seeks to leverage Nigeria’s rich maritime resources for sustainable growth and development. Topics on the agenda will include sustainable energy, governance, blue tourism, fisheries, and shipping.

According to the statement, the workshop will commence with welcoming remarks from Mr. Georges Asseko of the African Union, followed by opening addresses from Mr. Obinna Anozie and Hon. Gboyega Oyetola, the Minister responsible for the Blue Economy in Nigeria. This introductory session will outline the workshop’s objectives and highlight the importance of the Blue Economy for Nigeria.

Afterward, Dr. Patrick Karani will provide an overview of the Africa Blue Economy Strategy, followed by technical discussions. Participants will then break into smaller groups to delve into specific areas such as sustainable energy, governance, blue tourism, fisheries, and shipping, allowing for focused discussions and networking opportunities.

The second day will continue with group evaluations of the implementation plan for the proposed strategy, exploring topics like sustainable ecosystems, innovative funding, and effective governance. Open dialogues will encourage cross-sector collaboration, with rapporteurs summarizing each group’s findings.

As the workshop concludes, the Director or Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is expected to present the National Blue Economy Strategy, its implementation plan, and governance coordination mechanisms. The event will wrap up with the adoption of a communiqué, validation of the strategy, and final discussions, all aimed at shaping the future of Nigeria’s Blue Economy.
