NPFL Expands Investigation into Betting Allegations

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is taking a tougher stance on betting-related misconduct as it deepens its ongoing investigation into match-fixing and gambling among players. What initially appeared to be a single case involving one former goalkeeper is now shaping into a broader inquiry that could involve several more players.

The league’s decision to extend the investigation follows the recent controversy surrounding former Plateau United goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka. He was summoned to face the NPFL disciplinary panel after allegedly refusing to sign a betting and match-fixing clause in a contract offered to him by Shooting Stars Football Club. The incident sparked widespread conversation across the Nigerian football community, with many calling for greater accountability and transparency in the sport.

While Adeyinka’s suspension has now been lifted by the NPFL following his appearance before the panel, the league has made it clear that this is only the beginning. According to league officials, more players will soon be invited to face questioning as part of the expanded investigation.

Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, Davidson Owumi, confirmed this development in a letter obtained by The PUNCH. He explained that findings from the preliminary inquiry have uncovered enough grounds to warrant further questioning of individuals who may be connected to the case either directly or indirectly.

“The information received from the inquest, coupled with our investigative findings, has necessitated further inquiry into this matter,” Owumi said in the letter. “All those mentioned to be involved one way or the other in unravelling this matter will be invited as the investigation continues.”

While the probe intensifies, the NPFL has opted to give Adeyinka a fair chance to resume his professional career. His temporary suspension has been lifted, and he is now free to register for any club of his choice. Owumi stated that this decision was taken in the interest of fairness and to avoid jeopardizing the player’s career prematurely.

“For the benefit of fair hearing and not to put your career in jeopardy, the suspension placed on your registration in the NPFL has been lifted. You are free to register for any club of your choice. We thank you for your prompt response and cooperation,” Owumi added.

Adeyinka has remained firm in asserting his innocence. In a public statement shared on his Facebook page, he gave his side of the story regarding the contractual clause with Shooting Stars and his previous fallout with Plateau United.

According to him, his only concern during negotiations with 3SC was about the clarity and fairness of the betting clause in the contract. He explained that he questioned the criteria for determining guilt in cases involving betting or match-fixing allegations, especially if clubs were relying on rumors or public opinion rather than solid proof.

“During the contract negotiation phase, I reviewed the agreement and noted a clause related to contract termination in the event of betting allegations,” Adeyinka wrote. “I requested clarification on the criteria used to determine such allegations, as some clubs may rely on rumours, speculation, or public opinion. I emphasised that I would be willing to sign the contract if the club agreed to base their judgment on concrete evidence.”

He added that after a productive discussion, the Sporting Director of Shooting Stars agreed to adjust the clause to require evidence-based decisions, which he accepted. Adeyinka also noted that his previous contract termination by Plateau United was linked to a match against Sunshine Stars in which he did not even play. He said the experience made him more cautious and determined to protect himself from any future unfair accusations.

That experience now seems to have opened the door for a deeper look into the affairs of his former club. Sources close to the NPFL revealed that the next set of individuals to appear before the panel will include former teammates of Adeyinka who also left Plateau United after the incident. Though no names have been officially released, league officials have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that more revelations may follow.

This is not the first time Nigerian football has come under scrutiny for alleged match manipulation. Just last season, the NPFL launched another investigation into Lobi Stars following explosive allegations made by the club’s media officer, Emmanuel Ujah. He accused players of intentionally fixing matches during a particularly poor run of results. Although the accusations led to Ujah’s suspension by the league, they reignited the conversation around the integrity of Nigerian football and the need for systemic reforms.

For years, whispers of betting syndicates, match-fixing, and undue influence have hovered over Nigeria’s domestic football league. What has often been lacking is the political will and administrative commitment to pursue such allegations with seriousness and transparency. The current probe suggests a shift in that culture.

Many within the football community are welcoming the investigation as a step in the right direction. Analysts, former players, and fans believe that a full-scale crackdown on unethical behavior could restore credibility to the NPFL and protect the future of young talents trying to build careers through hard work and fair play.

At the same time, there are concerns about the need for due process and fairness. Sports lawyers and athlete advocates have stressed that while the league has every right to protect its integrity, it must ensure that players are not wrongfully penalized based on speculation or unverified claims. The emphasis, they say, must remain on thorough investigation, evidence-based findings, and transparency in disciplinary actions.

As more names emerge and the panel continues its work, the NPFL stands at a crucial crossroads. What happens next could determine whether Nigerian football takes a decisive leap toward reform or falls back into the shadows of controversy.
