Reminisce Explains Reasons His Children Will Never Pursue Music

Nigerian musician Reminisce opens up on his reluctance for his children to follow in his footsteps and pursue music careers, emphasising the industry’s severe problems.

The singer said this during a recent interview on Pulse On The Record with fellow rapper Vector the Viper. He talked about the unpredictable nature of the music industry and why he thinks it’s not the best path for his children.

“No, I don’t want my children to do music, and I don’t believe they should. “I’m not speaking as an African parent; I’m speaking from personal experience,” Reminisce explained.

He emphasised the industry’s unexpected character, saying, “The point is, music is insane.”

“It’s like to football: you can be the most talented person and still come up empty-handed.”

“I have pals who used to play football with me, and some of them went on to have professional careers, and I have people who are 43 years old like me who are still looking for work.”

The father of two emphasised that, while he would encourage his children’s musical interests, he would prioritise schooling.

“It may never happen, so what I would say is, ‘Fine, get yourself a basic education first that you can pursue.'”

So if it comes, great; if it doesn’t, that’s good. But I’m not going to start pushing them tonight because it’s going to be extremely difficult.

“It’s wild, so I’d rather set you on the proper route, but the most important thing is to earn an education first. If you choose to pursue it, I will back you. But music as the first choice? No.”

“It’s tough and challenging; less than 5% of people can manufacture these things,” he added.

Speaking about the significance of having a “backup plan,” Reminisce compared the industry to a high-stakes lottery, saying, “For every Ronaldo you see, there are 9000 people who didn’t make it.”

Hey, the essentials are done first so there is something to fall back on if things don’t work out. I’m not going to convince any child that it will work out for them because it did for me. “It may never happen.”
