Senate to prob fake news on Akpabio’s impeachment

Senate President Godswill Akpabio

The Senate has initiated an inquiry into claims regarding a supposed plan to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, labeling the rumors as unfounded.

During the plenary session on Wednesday, the Senate assigned the matter to its Committee on Special Duties, instructing them to investigate the source of the misleading reports.

Responding to the circulating social media chatter, Akpabio addressed allegations that the Department of State Security had assumed control over the National Assembly in preparation for an impeachment. With a touch of humor, he noted that the Senate was functioning normally, unaware of the false narratives being propagated.

“We are here, conducting our business quietly, unaware of the mischief unfolding behind us. Such misinformation is part of our daily challenges. Some use AI to distort the truth, likely to drive traffic and profit from platforms like YouTube,” he stated, forwarding the matter to the Committee on Special Duties for further examination.

He assured the public of the Senate’s stability and dismissed the impeachment rumors as baseless. “I hope the public recognizes this as false news. The chamber is quite stable, and there is no discussion of impeachment,” he emphasized.

In response, Shehu Kaka, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, committed to investigating the issue and providing a report back to the Senate.

Additionally, despite reports of heightened security at the National Assembly, an observation  revealed no unusual presence of security personnel, further contradicting claims made by some news outlets. This is not the first instance of impeachment rumors concerning Akpabio.
