Senator builds military base in Kogi to tackle insecurity
In a proactive step to combat escalating insecurity in Kogi West, Senator Sunday Karimi has taken the lead in establishing a military base. This facility, situated on the outskirts of Egbe in the Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, is expected to enhance security not just in Kogi but also in neighboring areas of Kwara State.
During the inauguration of the base on Saturday, Senator Karimi emphasized that the initiative aims to bolster the capabilities of the military and other security agencies, enabling them to respond more swiftly to threats posed by terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal elements. He shared that the idea for the military base came to him in January, driven by the need to address the increasing criminal activities near the Kogi-Kwara border, where vast forests are becoming hideouts for lawbreakers.
Karimi remarked, “The establishment of this military base is intended to assist the Nigerian military and security forces in their rapid response to the growing menace of criminal activities in our region. The presence of a well-equipped military installation will not only deter criminals but also restore peace and security to communities in both Kogi and Kwara States.”
The senator, who personally financed the construction, detailed that the new base features two hostels accommodating 85 soldiers, complete with beds and necessary furnishings for comfortable living. It also includes an armory and offices for the base’s commander.
Governor Usman Ododo, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Commander Jerry Omadara (retd), expressed gratitude to Senator Karimi for this initiative. He stated that the base would allow the Army to effectively manage security in the region. “This Forward Operating Base is essential for strengthening security in Kogi State and will facilitate the Army’s control over the area, including Yagba East and its surroundings,” he said.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who was represented by Major General Obinna Onubogu, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, praised the senator for his dedication to this important project. Lagbaja noted, “I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Senator Karimi for his determination in overseeing the construction and completion of this vital facility. It is through partnerships like this that the Nigerian Army feels supported by the community in our quest to tackle insecurity nationwide.”
He further explained that this new military base would play a crucial role in securing not only Kogi but also the ten neighboring states. “Kogi State’s geographical significance makes it central to our security efforts,” Lagbaja added. “It is bordered by states from various regions, making it susceptible to threats arising from any of these areas.”
He concluded by highlighting the importance of such forward operating bases in enhancing operational efficiency, stating that they enable the Army to extend its reach and provide security not only within host states but also to their neighbors.
