Udogwu Shares His Thoughts On Idris Elba Role In ‘Things Fall Apart’
The renowned Nollywood actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu feels that a Nigerian actor would be a better fit for the part that Idris Elba, a British actor, was given in the upcoming television production of Chinua Achebe’s beloved book “Things Fall Apart.”
Elba is expected to portray “Okonkwo,” a role that was previously filled by Nigerian actor Pete Edochie in the adaptations from 1971 and 1987.
In a Channels TV interview, Udokwu expressed his opinion that Nigerian performers could provide a greater understanding of the part.
“There’s this talk about Idris Elba getting cast for the Hollywood production of ‘Things Fall Apart’ as Okonkwo.
“As an actor, I have nothing against it, but I believe that Nigerian performers of the highest calibre were capable of carrying off the part even more, given their understanding of the origins of the narrative.
In order to increase Nollywood’s international exposure, he advocated for cooperation between the two film industries.”
“More cooperation is required. Years ago, I asserted that Nollywood has matured. We don’t need to accomplish anything further to demonstrate to the world that we have exceptional talent.
Collaboration is currently what Nollywood needs, and it needs to start now. Our level of cooperation with our European colleagues must increase.”
“That is the right course to take right now, and I think things are starting to move in that direction gradually, so we will get there eventually.” He remarked
Lateefah Adedimeji also shared his thought on this issue a while ago. Speaking as a guest on Nollywood on Radio, Lateef Adedimeji defended the casting choice, speculating that the producers’ preference for Idris Elba was motivated by their want for the movie to become internationally known.
Adedimeji said, “I’m positive it’s not because we don’t have actors who can play that role.”
“There’s more going on here; it might be for the benefit of the market or to guarantee international recognition.
” However, this does not indicate that Nollywood lacks ability.Adedimeji highlighted that Nollywood is full with gifted actors who can play Okonkwo brilliantly, reiterating that the industry’s abilities should never be questioned.”
The casting emphasises the harmony between authenticity and marketability and continues to spark debates over African representation in international film.
