UNICAL Launches Online Portal for NELFUND Refund Processing

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has introduced an online portal to make the refund process easier for students under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

The university said the new platform was created to reduce delays and improve the way refund applications are handled.

The move comes after concerns raised by some students who paid their tuition fees before NELFUND later paid the same fees directly to the university.

Speaking on the development, UNICAL’s NELFUND Desk Officer, Mrs. Elizabeth Otu Effiwatt, said the portal was developed by the university’s Directorate of ICT after the school reviewed the challenges experienced with the manual refund process.

According to her, the new system will help speed up the processing of applications and make the entire exercise more organised.

She also disclosed that the university has already received 2,090 refund applications through the portal.

More Than 1,000 Students Already Refunded

Mrs. Effiwatt said UNICAL has completed nine batches of refund payments, with 1,089 students already receiving their refunds.

She added that more than 3,000 students have benefited from the NELFUND loan scheme, while the university has received ₦979,891,400 from the Fund for students across different departments.

The university said the figures show that refund payments are ongoing and that more eligible students will receive their money as applications continue to be processed.

Students who are yet to apply can visit the university’s Student Data Portal at https://studentdata.unical.edu.ng/ to verify their records and follow the instructions for the refund process.

UNICAL also advised students to ensure that the information they provide is correct to avoid delays during verification.

How to Request Your School Fees Refund on the UNICAL Portal

Students who paid their school fees before NELFUND later paid the tuition on their behalf can request a refund through the university’s Student Data Portal.

To begin the process:

  1. Visit https://studentdata.unical.edu.ng/
  2. Enter your Matriculation Number or JAMB Registration Number.
  3. Enter your Surname.
  4. Select your Current Level.
  5. Verify your details and follow the instructions on the portal to complete your refund request.

Students are advised to ensure that the information provided matches their school records to avoid delays during verification.

The university also urged applicants to keep checking the portal and other official UNICAL communication channels for updates on their refund status.

University Urges Students to Ignore False Claims

The university urged students and members of the public to disregard reports claiming it has refused to refund NELFUND beneficiaries.

Management maintained that refund processing is ongoing and said the new portal is part of efforts to make the process faster, more transparent and easier for students.

Eligible students have also been encouraged to follow updates from the university’s official channels while waiting for their refunds.
