Apple has introduced a new financing programme that allows customers to buy selected iPhones, Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches through affordable monthly instalments instead of paying the full amount upfront.

The initiative, launched in partnership with Klarna, is designed to make Apple’s premium devices more accessible as smartphone and computer prices continue to rise worldwide.

Although the programme is currently available only in the United States, Nigerians who purchase Apple products through international retailers and shipping services may also benefit if they qualify.

Apple Introduces Monthly Instalment Payments

Apple’s new financing programme enables eligible customers to lease selected Apple devices with fixed monthly payments.

The service is available through:

  • Apple retail stores in the United States
  • Apple’s official website
  • The Apple Store app

Instead of making a one-time payment, customers can spread the cost over one to three years, depending on the device.

The company says the move is intended to make its latest products more affordable while encouraging customers to upgrade more frequently.

Full List of Apple Devices Eligible for Monthly Payments

Customers can finance the following Apple products:

  • iPhone 17 series
  • iPhone Air
  • Apple Watch Series 11
  • Apple Watch Ultra 3
  • MacBook Air
  • MacBook Pro
  • iMac
  • Mac Studio
  • iPad Air
  • iPad Pro
  • iPad mini

Repayment Periods

iPhones and Apple Watches

  • 12 months
  • 24 months

Macs and iPads

The longer repayment periods are expected to reduce monthly costs for buyers.

Devices Not Included

Apple has excluded several lower-priced products from the programme.

These include:

  • iPhone 16
  • MacBook Neo
  • Standard iPad
  • Apple Watch SE

Customers interested in these devices will still need to purchase them using existing payment options.

Lower Monthly Payments

According to Apple, monthly payments now begin at $17.99 for eligible iPhone models.

This is significantly lower than the company’s previous iPhone Upgrade Programme, where monthly payments generally started at around $42.

The lower payment structure is expected to attract more customers who prefer smaller monthly expenses over a large upfront payment.

New Programme Replaces Apple’s Upgrade Plan

The financing initiative replaces Apple’s long-running iPhone Upgrade Programme.

Under the old programme, users could trade in their iPhone after making 12 monthly payments.

The new leasing model expands beyond iPhones to include Macs, iPads and Apple Watches, giving customers more flexibility and more product choices.

Why Apple Is Making the Change

Industry analysts believe Apple is responding to changing consumer habits.

Many smartphone users are now keeping their devices for longer before upgrading.

Research has shown that the average smartphone owner now replaces their phone after nearly two years, compared to much shorter upgrade cycles in the past.

By offering affordable monthly installments, Apple hopes to:

  • Make premium devices easier to afford
  • Encourage more frequent upgrades
  • Keep customers within the Apple ecosystem
  • Increase long-term customer loyalty

Rising Device Prices

The announcement comes as Apple continues to face increasing production costs.

The company recently increased prices on several Mac and iPad models, citing higher memory costs driven by growing demand from artificial intelligence data centres.

Analysts also expect future iPhones to become more expensive.

Some industry experts predict that flagship iPhone models could eventually cost around $1,500, compared with today’s average prices of between $1,000 and $1,200.

Introducing monthly payment options could help reduce the impact of those higher prices on consumers.

What It Means for Nigerians

Although the financing programme is currently limited to the United States, many Nigerians purchase Apple products through relatives abroad, international shopping platforms and freight-forwarding services.

If Apple expands the programme to more countries in the future, Nigerian consumers could benefit from paying for premium devices in manageable monthly instalments instead of making a large one-time payment.

For now, customers in Nigeria will need to continue buying Apple products through local retailers or international sellers that offer their own financing options.

Conclusion

Apple’s new monthly payment programme marks a significant shift in how the company sells its premium devices.

By allowing customers to spread payments across one to three years, Apple hopes to make its products more affordable while strengthening customer loyalty in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.

Although the programme is currently available only in the United States, it could eventually expand to other regions, giving more consumers including Nigerians access to flexible payment options for Apple products.
