Constant grid collapse affecting DISCOs’ operations-JEDC
The Head of Corporate Communications at Jos Electricity Distribution Company, Dr. Elijah Adakole, has highlighted that the frequent failures of the national power grid significantly impact the revenue of Distribution Companies. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Jos, Adakole noted that many customers of JElDC utilize the prepaid metering system, which means they only pay for the electricity they consume. Consequently, when power is unavailable for distribution, it results in no revenue collection, leading to substantial financial losses.
Adakole stated, “The ongoing grid failures have a severe effect on the economy as numerous businesses rely on electricity at both macro and micro levels.” He urged the Federal Government to pursue sustainable solutions to this pressing issue.
Civil society activist Mr. Steve Aluko expressed concern over the repeated grid failures, citing their damaging repercussions on the nation’s economy and the welfare of its citizens. Welder Mr. Samson Benson shared his struggles, stating that the lack of electricity was hindering his business operations. He expressed fears of not only losing profits but also clients due to his inability to meet delivery deadlines caused by power outages.
“Much of the profit I could have made has gone toward purchasing diesel for my generator, yet even with that, I still couldn’t deliver my clients’ items on time because of electricity shortages,” he explained. Benson called on the government to find a permanent solution to the ongoing grid issues, emphasizing that many businesses depend heavily on a stable power supply.
Similarly, salon owner Mrs. Alice Dung shared that the lack of electricity was adversely affecting her business, preventing her from providing the full range of services that her clients expect.
