Cross River gov moves to boost farmers’ revenue

Stakeholders during the flagging off the cultivation of 2,000 hectares of commercial maize in odukpani LGA, Cross River State.

“I envision a future where every resident of Cross River rises above the poverty line, as the stark divide between the wealthy and the impoverished in Nigeria highlights the need for change,” she stated.

Effiong explained that the initiative is designed to foster understanding and independence among market players in various value chains over the next six years, ultimately integrating Cross River residents into the economic system to combat multidimensional poverty.

Dennis Ikpali, the Director of Project Grow, noted that farmers in the state previously cultivated maize primarily for subsistence. However, Project Grow is helping them transition to a commercial model by utilizing 2,000 hectares of land for larger-scale production.

Ikpali mentioned that the maize used in the project is early-maturing, high-yielding, and resilient to diseases and drought, with the potential to produce four tons per hectare. “This means that within four months of planting, the 2,000 hectares could yield 8,000 tons of maize. With market prices estimated at N600,000 per ton, this could translate to an income of 10 to 12 billion naira flowing into the local economy,” she added.

One beneficiary, Mrs. Mary Ayi, shared that she previously grew cassava but is now eager to shift to commercial maize farming due to its shorter growth cycle. She expressed her intent to reinvest her earnings to expand her farm.

Another local, Nsa Okon from Odukpani, expressed satisfaction with the implementation of Project Grow and urged those still awaiting their allocations to be patient, as the distribution process is being carried out in phases.

To support effective land cultivation, each farmer is provided with a one million naira loan from partnering commercial banks. Upon harvest, Flour Mills Nigeria, a key partner in the project, will handle the maize procurement.
