Engineers seek enforcement of building regulations
Johnson Adeyoye, the president of the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers, has stressed the critical need for government involvement in the structural engineering industry. He made this statement during the 2024 NIStructE conference held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Speaking on the theme “Building Stronger and Leaner Structures in a Challenging Economy,” Adeyoye urged for rigorous compliance with regulatory standards, particularly regarding the hiring of qualified structural engineers. “To prevent the rising incidents of building collapses, it’s essential that the right professionals are assigned to the right roles,” he asserted.
He emphasized that only engineers registered with COREN and certified by NIStructE should be allowed to design and oversee the construction of multi-storey buildings nationwide. The conference brought together important stakeholders, including the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, and the Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi.
Adeyoye highlighted, “The Institution plays a vital role in enhancing the practice of Structural Engineering in Nigeria.” He pointed out that strong regulations are essential for ensuring the safety and stability of structures, which are crucial for national progress. “The government’s role is significant in ensuring that only high-quality, stable, safe, and economically sound structures are built to enhance our nation’s landscape,” he added.
This appeal for stringent measures follows a series of building collapses that have raised alarms about structural integrity and the qualifications of individuals involved in construction projects. The NIStructE conference also aimed to foster professional development and mentorship, highlighting the importance of seasoned engineers guiding newcomers in the field.
Adeyoye noted, “The Institution has been proactive in developing mentorship programs by sponsoring young graduates each year.” He pointed out that the conference serves not only as an annual meeting for professionals but also as a vital platform for self-assessment within the structural engineering community.
With the support of key government officials, Adeyoye stated that the institution is advocating for policies that will enhance the standards of practice in Nigeria’s construction industry.
