JUST IN: Gunmen kill Ogun State councillorship candidate
On Saturday afternoon, a councilorship candidate named Adeyinka Adeleke was shot and killed by suspected gunmen in the Jide Jones area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State. Adeleke was the All Progressives Congress candidate for Ward 15 in the upcoming local government elections set for November 16.
Reports indicate that the assailants arrived in a tinted vehicle and opened fire randomly as they approached the scene. Eyewitness accounts suggest that they targeted Adeleke, shooting him and leaving him fatally wounded.
A disturbing video that emerged online captured the aftermath of the incident, showing Adeleke’s lifeless body while the sounds of grieving bystanders could be heard in the background. According to a source familiar with the situation, the attack caused significant panic in the area, with residents rushing to find safety.
One source stated, “Gunmen killed the APC councilorship candidate for Ibara Ward 15, Adeyinka Adeleke, today. They arrived in a tinted car, shot him, and then assaulted him with stones until he succumbed. The atmosphere is tense, and people are fleeing for their lives.”
Another anonymous witness recounted that one of the assailants exited the tinted vehicle, shot Adeleke at close range, and then further assaulted him to ensure he was dead. It has been reported that Adeleke was previously employed in the transport union in the Panseke area of Abeokuta.
“The incident occurred around 2 PM and took everyone by surprise… It’s unclear whether this was a cult-related attack. People in the vicinity are locking up their shops, and the tension is palpable. It’s incredibly tragic,” the source added.
A senior police official confirmed the incident to reporters, noting that Adeleke’s family had taken his body for burial. The police representative stated, “Yes, the incident occurred. His family chose to take his body for burial.”
As of this report, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola had not yet responded to inquiries regarding the situation.
