Kano PDP elects Kwankwaso’s ex-commissioner new chairman
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has officially appointed Yusuf Kibiya as its new chairman. Kibiya, who previously served as the Commissioner for Agriculture under former governor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso from 1999 to 2003, emerged victorious in the party’s recent election.
The announcement was made by Halilu Mazagani, the chairman of the party’s Election Committee, who revealed the results on Sunday. Kibiya won decisively, securing an impressive 3,964 votes compared to his opponent Nura Nuhu, who managed to obtain only 244 votes.
Mazagani praised the efforts of the party officials throughout the state, stating, “They have done a commendable job.” He pointed out that the successful organization of the congress is a promising sign that the PDP is on track to address existing rifts among its members. He expressed optimism that the party will emerge as a more united and formidable opposition capable of challenging the ruling party.
“Our party, recognized as the largest in Africa, certainly encounters some internal challenges. However, we have consistently learned to navigate our differences,” he remarked. He went on to emphasize the party’s commitment to fostering unity and mobilizing resources effectively in preparation for the upcoming 2027 general elections. “I am confident that the electorate will support us,” he added, urging the party to present candidates who are credible and capable of winning the trust of Nigerians.
In a show of support for Kibiya’s leadership, former Kano governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau also spoke at the event. He assured party members that the PDP is ready to assemble a winning team for the 2027 elections. Shekarau emphasized the PDP’s readiness to compete vigorously with any political party in upcoming elections, including the local government elections set for October 26, 2024.
The election of Kibiya is seen as a pivotal moment for the PDP in Kano State. Party leaders believe that his experience and leadership skills will be instrumental in unifying the party and strengthening its position ahead of future electoral contests. With the commitment to address internal issues and present a united front, the PDP aims to regain its influence and secure victories in both local and national elections.
As the party gears up for the challenges ahead, the focus will be on strategic planning and candidate selection to ensure that it resonates with the electorate. The leadership transition reflects the PDP’s ongoing efforts to reinforce its structure and enhance its appeal to voters in the region. The upcoming elections will be a crucial test of the party’s resilience and ability to adapt to the dynamic political landscape in Nigeria.
