The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action against 15 money-lending firms operating within the state, sanctioning them for violating operational guidelines, engaging in unethical debt recovery practices, and operating without proper approvals.

As part of the enforcement exercise, authorities also sealed the offices of the affected lenders in a bid to curb illegal financial operations and protect residents from exploitation.

The development was confirmed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ibrahim Layode, who stated that the crackdown forms part of ongoing efforts to regulate the lending sector and protect consumers from predatory loan operators.

Government Moves to Protect Borrowers from Exploitation

According to the commissioner, several of the sanctioned lenders failed to comply with required regulations guiding money-lending businesses in Lagos State.

He explained that the affected firms were found guilty of operating without proper notification to the Ministry of Home Affairs, a key requirement for legal operation.

In addition, some operators were accused of imposing excessive interest rates and hidden charges that placed borrowers under severe financial pressure.

Allegations of Harassment and Unethical Debt Recovery

Authorities also raised concerns over unethical loan recovery tactics used by some of the firms, including harassment, intimidation, and other aggressive collection methods.

These practices, according to the state government, have become increasingly common among some unregulated digital lending platforms, prompting widespread complaints from residents.

The commissioner emphasized that such conduct would no longer be tolerated, noting that Lagos State is committed to sanitising the financial lending space.

Offices Sealed as Enforcement Action

As part of the regulatory action, the government sealed the offices of the 15 offending lenders.

Officials said the measure serves both as punishment and a deterrent to other operators who may be engaging in similar illegal activities.

The Lagos State Government reiterated that only licensed and compliant lenders will be allowed to operate within the state going forward.

Over 600 Licensed Money Lenders Under Monitoring

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Lagos State currently has over 600 registered money-lending operators.

However, authorities say active monitoring is ongoing to ensure full compliance with licensing conditions and ethical standards.

Licensed lenders are required to:

  • Maintain valid operating licenses
  • Disclose official business addresses
  • Renew permits as required
  • Comply with state lending guidelines

Failure to comply with these requirements may lead to suspension or outright closure.

Alignment With FCCPC Consumer Protection Rules

Beyond state regulations, lenders operating in Lagos are also expected to comply with federal guidelines issued by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

The FCCPC has repeatedly warned digital lending platforms against:

  • Violating borrower privacy
  • Using harassment for debt recovery
  • Contacting borrowers’ contacts for pressure or shame tactics
  • Engaging in predatory lending practices

The commission also enforces stricter data protection rules to ensure borrowers are treated fairly and transparently.

What Borrowers Should Do

Residents are advised to always verify the legitimacy of any money-lending company before taking a loan.

Borrowers who experience harassment, illegal charges, or abusive recovery methods are encouraged to report such cases to the FCCPC for investigation and possible enforcement action.

Authorities stressed that consumer protection remains a top priority, and offenders will continue to face strict penalties.

Conclusion

The Lagos State Government says the latest sanctions demonstrate its commitment to cleaning up the financial lending sector and protecting residents from exploitative practices.

With increased monitoring and enforcement, officials say only transparent, licensed, and responsible lenders will be allowed to operate in the state.
