Mudiame University, Irrua, has taken another major step in strengthening its medical education programme after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, to provide clinical training opportunities for students studying medicine and other health-related courses.
The agreement, formally signed in Benin City, will enable students of the university’s medical and health sciences programmes to gain practical experience in a modern healthcare environment, an important requirement for professional training and accreditation.
The partnership comes months after the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted approval for Mudiame University to commence its Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, opening a new chapter in the institution’s expansion into medical education.
Partnership to Strengthen Medical Education
For medical students, classroom learning alone is not enough. Clinical exposure in hospitals and healthcare facilities forms a critical part of their training, allowing them to interact with patients, observe medical procedures, and develop practical skills under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals.
Under the new arrangement, Edo Specialist Hospital will serve as a teaching and clinical training partner for Mudiame University, providing students with access to healthcare facilities where they can complete required clinical postings and gain hands-on experience.
The collaboration is also expected to support research activities, professional development initiatives, and other academic engagements between both institutions.
Top Government and Health Officials Attend Signing Ceremony
The signing ceremony attracted senior government officials, healthcare administrators, and university leaders.
Leading the Edo State Government delegation was the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole. Also in attendance were the Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Health, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Matters, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, and members of the management team of Edo Specialist Hospital.
Representing Mudiame University were the Chancellor, Professor Sunny Eromosele, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Aluyor, the Registrar, and other senior university officials.
The event underscored the importance both institutions place on developing a strong pipeline of healthcare professionals for Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.
Edo Government Reaffirms Support for Healthcare Training
Speaking during the ceremony, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, described the partnership as a positive development for the state’s healthcare and education sectors.
According to him, the Edo State Government remains committed to supporting initiatives that improve healthcare delivery while strengthening the training of future medical professionals.
He stated that the government would continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the collaboration succeeds and contributes meaningfully to healthcare development in the state.
Dr. Oshiomhole further noted that Edo Specialist Hospital is committed to research, innovation, and the provision of quality healthcare services, adding that students posted to the facility for clinical training would benefit from a conducive learning environment.
Mudiame University Preparing Future Doctors
Vice-Chancellor of Mudiame University, Professor Emmanuel Aluyor, described the agreement as an important milestone in the university’s efforts to build a strong and reputable medical programme.
He revealed that the institution has already admitted its first batch of medical students and is currently processing admissions for a second cohort.
Professor Aluyor explained that students enrolled in the MBBS programme begin intensive clinical training from their third year, making partnerships with accredited healthcare institutions essential.
He expressed confidence that the collaboration with Edo Specialist Hospital would provide students with the practical exposure needed to complement their academic learning and prepare them for careers in medicine.
According to him, the university deliberately commenced discussions early to ensure that all structures required for quality medical training are in place before students reach the clinical stage of their studies.
Benefits Beyond Medical Students
While the partnership is particularly important for students in the MBBS programme, university officials disclosed that it will also benefit students in other health-related disciplines.
Programmes expected to benefit include:
- Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc)
- Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)
- Other healthcare and allied health programmes offered by the university
Students in these fields will have opportunities to gain practical experience, participate in supervised clinical activities, and interact with healthcare professionals in a real-world setting.
Growing Demand for Well-Trained Healthcare Professionals
Nigeria’s healthcare sector continues to face increasing demand for qualified doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, and other healthcare practitioners.
Experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of strengthening medical education and clinical training to ensure graduates are adequately prepared to meet the challenges of modern healthcare delivery.
Partnerships between universities and teaching hospitals are regarded as a crucial part of that process, helping bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
A New Chapter for Medical Education in Edo State
Founded five years ago, Mudiame University has steadily expanded its academic offerings across various disciplines. The introduction of its MBBS programme and the new collaboration with Edo Specialist Hospital represent significant developments in the institution’s growth strategy.
For Edo State, the partnership is expected to contribute to the training of a new generation of healthcare professionals while supporting ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services across the state.
As the university continues to build its medical and health sciences programmes, the agreement with Edo Specialist Hospital is set to play a key role in shaping the practical training and professional development of future doctors, nurses, and healthcare specialists.
