Police Intercept Vehicle Laden With Explosives in Daura, Arrest Three Suspects

Operatives of the Katsina State Police Command have recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against insecurity following the interception of a vehicle conveying a large cache of highly explosive materials in Daura Local Government Area of the state. The operation, which was carried out at a police checkpoint in Koza, Daura, has led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of thousands of detonators and other dangerous items believed to be intended for criminal activities.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Katsina State Command, DSP Abubakar Aliyu. According to the statement, the arrest was made on January 7 during an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation conducted by officers deployed to the area as part of ongoing security measures.

DSP Aliyu disclosed that the first suspect, identified as Jamilu Musa, aged 40, was arrested while driving a Golf vehicle that was stopped at the checkpoint. Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, police officers discovered a total of 6,975 pieces of detonators carefully concealed inside the car, raising immediate concerns about their intended use.

“On January 7, while on intelligence-led stop and search duties, a team of police officers successfully intercepted a Golf vehicle driven by one Jamilu Musa,” the police spokesman said. “During an instant search of the vehicle, 6,975 pieces of detonators were recovered from the suspect’s possession, neatly concealed.”

Further investigation revealed that the explosives were not acting alone. During interrogation, Musa reportedly confessed that he had received the explosive materials from another individual identified as Najib, who is currently at large. According to the suspect’s statement, the materials were being transported from Kano State to Kongolam in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State.

As investigations progressed, police operatives were able to track and arrest two additional suspects believed to be part of the same criminal network. The suspects, identified as Ibrahim Murtala and Sulaiman Muhammad, were arrested at separate locations. A subsequent search led to the recovery of an even larger haul of explosive materials.

DSP Aliyu revealed that 7,500 electric detonators and 30 and a half bags of gelatine explosives, with a combined weight of approximately 2,273.65 kilograms, were recovered from the two suspects. The magnitude of the recovered items, according to security experts, underscores the serious threat such materials could pose if they had fallen into the wrong hands.

“The suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime,” the police spokesman stated. “They will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect.”

The Katsina State Police Command emphasized that the successful operation was in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who has ordered heightened vigilance, intelligence gathering, and proactive patrols across the country, particularly along major highways and border communities that are vulnerable to criminal infiltration.

DSP Aliyu added that the Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, CP Bello Shehu, has reiterated the command’s commitment to strengthening intelligence-led operations and adopting proactive strategies aimed at safeguarding lives and property across the state.

The interception has been widely described as a significant step in preventing potential acts of terrorism or banditry in the region, especially amid ongoing security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria. Authorities have assured residents that investigations will continue until all individuals connected to the illegal transportation and possession of explosives are brought to justice.
