Vaccination, key to polio eradication- Soludo’s wife

Anambra state First Lady, Nonye Soludo

As the world observes World Polio Day 2024, Dr. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, has called on nursing mothers to continue vaccinating their children in the state.

She made this appeal on Thursday after administering the poliomyelitis vaccine to infants at Amawbia Primary Healthcare Center in Amawbia-Awka, during an event commemorating the day.

Dr. Soludo noted that Anambra State has not reported any cases of poliomyelitis for the past ten years, attributing this success to the commitment of local mothers in prioritizing their children’s health.

“This day serves as a reminder of the global efforts towards a polio-free world and pays tribute to those working diligently to eradicate this disease,” she stated. “Vaccination is essential for complete eradication. Ensure your children are vaccinated to protect them from polio.”

She assured that the current administration, alongside relevant health authorities, will persist in its efforts to eliminate the virus in Anambra.

Dr. Soludo also praised the state’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Afam Obidike, the World Health Organization, and the management of the Nonye Soludo Healthy Living Initiative, along with other health partners, for their ongoing advocacy for health and wellness.

In a brief address, Commissioner Obidike reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining the measures that have successfully controlled the spread of viruses.

The event, organized by the state Ministry of Health in collaboration with WHO, also included a road walk in partnership with Rotary International, Awka District.
