WhatsApp to Start Charging Businesses for  Customer Replies

Businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform could face higher messaging costs from October 1, 2026, as Meta prepares to introduce charges for certain service messages that were previously free within the platform’s 24-hour customer service window.

The change will affect businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API, rather than individuals or businesses using the regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app.

What Is Changing?

Under WhatsApp’s current business messaging system, companies can respond to customers within a 24-hour customer service window without paying for certain service messages.

From October 1, 2026, some of those messages will become chargeable when sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform.

This means companies that handle large volumes of customer enquiries, orders, payment updates and other interactions through WhatsApp may see their messaging costs increase.

How Much Will WhatsApp Business Messages Cost in Nigeria?

The amount businesses pay depends on the recipient’s country and the category of message.

For Nigerian recipients, the reported rates include approximately:

  • Utility messages: $0.0101 per delivered message, or about ₦14
  • Marketing messages: $0.062 per delivered message, or about ₦84

The naira equivalents can change depending on the exchange rate.

These charges are for businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform and should not be confused with the standard WhatsApp Business application.

Example: What Could It Cost a Nigerian Business?

Consider a Nigerian fintech company that sends 500,000 chargeable utility messages to customers.

At $0.0101 per message, the Meta messaging charge would be:

500,000 × $0.0101 = $5,050

At an exchange rate that puts the dollar equivalent around ₦1,400, that would be approximately ₦7.07 million.

This is only an illustration of the potential Meta messaging cost. Businesses may also have separate charges from business solution providers, software platforms or other technology partners.

Which Businesses Will Be Affected?

The change is particularly relevant to businesses that use WhatsApp to communicate with customers at scale.

These include:

  • Banks
  • Fintech companies
  • Airlines
  • Telecommunications companies
  • Online retailers
  • E-commerce businesses
  • Logistics companies
  • Small and medium-sized businesses
  • Customer support companies

For these businesses, WhatsApp may be used for everything from answering customer questions to sending order updates, payment confirmations and other notifications.

Why Is This Important for Nigerian Businesses?

WhatsApp has become an important communication channel for businesses in Nigeria.

Many companies use the platform to interact with customers instead of relying entirely on traditional phone calls, SMS or email.

The introduction of additional message charges could therefore increase the cost of customer communication, particularly for companies sending hundreds of thousands or millions of messages.

Small businesses may also feel the impact if they depend on WhatsApp for both customer service and sales.

WhatsApp Business App Is Not Affected

One of the most important points for small business owners is that this change does not mean WhatsApp is becoming a paid messaging app.

Ordinary WhatsApp users will not suddenly be charged for sending messages to friends, family or businesses.

The change also does not introduce a general messaging fee for businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business application.

The affected businesses are those using the WhatsApp Business Platform to communicate with customers at scale.

WhatsApp Has Been Changing Its Business Pricing

Meta has been moving towards a per-message pricing structure for its business platform.

In July 2025, WhatsApp replaced its previous conversation-based pricing model with a per-message system for business-initiated template messages.

Service messages within the 24-hour customer service window continued to receive free treatment under the existing system.

The planned October 2026 change will remove some of that free treatment.

What Businesses Should Do

Businesses that rely heavily on the WhatsApp Business Platform should start reviewing how they use the service.

Companies may need to:

  • Monitor the number of chargeable messages they send.
  • Identify which messages fall under each pricing category.
  • Review automated customer communication.
  • Reduce unnecessary messages.
  • Consider whether certain communications can be handled through email, SMS or other channels.
  • Review the fees charged by their WhatsApp Business Solution Provider.
  • Include messaging costs when budgeting for customer support and marketing.

Businesses operating across multiple countries should also pay attention to the recipient’s location because WhatsApp pricing varies by market.
