Actress Ufoma McDermott Reveals The Cause Of Her Kidney Disease

The Nollywood actress, who has been taking medication for her condition for almost 12 years, reflected on the impact of drug abuse on her family during an emotional interview with media personality Chude Jideownwo.

She talked about her experience with kidney disease over the past 12 years and expressed her desire for others to prioritise their health.

She told Chude, “I really wish everyone would understand how important health is. My brother was diagnosed late on stage four and he had to go straight into dialysis and had complications.

I was diagnosed a lot earlier so I’ve lived on medication for almost 12 years now.”

She explained, “When my brother died, I rushed to my cardiologist. I was afraid, and so were my parents; is this genetic? We had to trace the renal ailment, which turned out to be caused by drug misuse.

“I had always suffered from migraines, headaches, and eyeaches, and I never wore glasses since they made me appear like a geek. I wouldn’t wear them and instead take pain relievers for my migraine.”

“I never took conventional pills; instead, I took strong medicines to relieve the discomfort. At one time, I had medicines in my wallet that I could offer to individuals,” she explained.

McDermott discovered that her disease was not genetic, but rather a side effect of long-term drug usage.

“The doctor told me that just because I was exposed to certain behaviours and my brother was exposed to the same things does not mean it is genetic.”

“I didn’t know I was abusing drugs, and the first time I was diagnosed with high blood pressure was at the age of 26, and I had no idea what it was.”
