NELFUND Warns Students: Loan Applications May Be Cancelled if Schools Fail to Complete Verification

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued an important warning to students with pending loan applications, stating that applications that remain unverified by institutions for an extended period may be cancelled.

The agency explained that institutional verification remains one of the most important stages of the student loan process, and applications cannot move forward until schools confirm the records of applicants through the Student Verification System (SVS).

As a result, students whose institutions fail to complete the verification process risk losing their current applications and may be required to submit fresh applications in a new application cycle.

Why Verification Matters

According to NELFUND, every student loan application must pass through a verification process before it can be approved for disbursement.

This verification is carried out by the student’s institution and is used to confirm that the applicant is a genuine student of the school and meets the requirements for the programme.

Without this confirmation, NELFUND cannot process or approve the application.

The agency therefore urged institutions to promptly verify student records to avoid delays and possible cancellation of applications.

Students Could Lose Their Current Applications

NELFUND noted that applications left pending because of incomplete verification may eventually be removed from the current processing cycle.

Affected students would then have to start the process again by submitting a new application when another application window opens.

This means that even students who successfully completed their application forms may still miss out on the loan if their schools fail to verify their information on time.

The agency advised applicants not to assume that submission alone guarantees approval.

What Students Should Do Now

Students who have already applied for the NELFUND loan scheme are encouraged to actively monitor their application status.

Applicants should also contact their institutions where necessary to confirm that their details have been verified and uploaded correctly on the Student Verification System.

According to NELFUND, staying informed and following up with schools can help prevent unnecessary delays and reduce the risk of application cancellation.

Institutions Asked to Update Student Records

NELFUND has also called on tertiary institutions across the country to update student records and complete all outstanding verifications.

The agency stressed that institutions play a critical role in the success of the student loan programme because applications cannot be processed without their participation.

To encourage compliance, NELFUND warned that schools that fail to complete student verification requirements may be publicly identified.

Upkeep Payments to Continue for Existing Beneficiaries

While verification issues continue to affect some applications, NELFUND reassured students already benefiting from the programme that upkeep payments will continue according to schedule.

However, beneficiaries may still be required to participate in future application cycles depending on the guidelines issued for each academic session.

Students are therefore advised to stay updated through official NELFUND channels and announcements from their institutions.

Over a Million Students Have Benefited

Since the launch of the student loan programme, NELFUND has recorded significant participation from institutions and students across Nigeria.

The agency’s records show that hundreds of thousands of students have successfully benefited from the scheme through the payment of institutional fees and monthly upkeep allowances.

The programme was created to reduce financial barriers to higher education and ensure that eligible Nigerian students can continue their studies without financial hardship.

Final Thoughts

NELFUND’s latest warning serves as an important reminder that institutional verification is not a mere formality but a compulsory stage of the student loan process.

Students with pending applications should take proactive steps to ensure their institutions complete the necessary verification requirements.

Failure to do so could result in the cancellation of their applications and the need to reapply in a future cycle.

For this reason, applicants are advised to regularly check their application status, follow up with their schools, and ensure that all required information has been properly verified.
